Laptop Specifications

All W. P. Carey graduate students are required to have and maintain a laptop during their studies.

Operating System recommendations: W. P. Carey supports both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X based systems running Microsoft Office.

  • Windows-based laptops must be running Windows 10 or newer
  • Macintosh laptops must be running OS 11 (Big Sur) or higher
  • Work laptops are highly discouraged (install issues; tied to networks; security constraints)
  • A netbook, iPad or tablet, Surface RT, Chromebook, or smart phone is a good companion to a laptop but is not a replacement for having a fully functional laptop.

Faculty Directors have provided additional specific recommendations for laptop requirements for students in the MACC, MTAX, MSGL, MS-ISM & MSBA programs:

Processor Minimum: Intel® Core i5
Recommended: Intel® Core i7; Mac M-series
Operating System: PC: Windows®
Mac: OSX
Memory: Minimum: 8GB
Recommended: 16GB
Hard Drive: Minimum: 250GB SATA hard drive
Recommended: 512GB Solid State Drive (SSD)
Wireless Network: 802.11n/ac
Software: Microsoft Office 2016, 2019 or Office365 (the version available for all students from ASU)

It is important that your computer meets the requirements for your program.

Warranty

  • It is strongly recommended that your laptop have a warranty that will cover it for your time at W. P. Carey School of Business.
  • It is advised that your warranty allows for either on-site hardware repair or mail-in depot service.
  • It is also recommended that your laptop have some form of accidental damage protection to cover drops, liquid spills, and a broken screen (most manufacturer’s warranties don't cover a cracked or broken screen).

W. P. Carey Resources

Classrooms and Team rooms

The W. P. Carey School of Business is predominately on a Microsoft Windows operating system platform. All ASU classrooms and team rooms are configured with the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system and Microsoft Office 2016.

ASU Wireless Network

ASU provides wireless network access to all faculty, staff, and students. To connect to this network you must be on campus in an area that is covered by the wireless network. When you are on campus you should connect to the wireless network named "asu encrypted.” A network named "asu_guest" is available but you should not use this network since network services are restricted as a security measure.

Citrix

W. P. Carey administers Citrix servers that deliver remote applications, such as Microsoft applications, data analysis applications, and development/programming applications. Citrix provides the convenience of having access to an application without having the application installed on your computer. Access to approved applications is provided automatically based on your affiliation with the W. P. Carey School of Business. You do not need to be on the ASU campus to access Citrix, but you may not have access to any application during this time.

Printing in McCord Hall

Multifunction printers are located across the second and third floor of McCord Hall North and are available for all graduate students to facilitate copying, scanning to email, and printing of school-related materials. To connect to the printer you must be on the ASU campus, connected to the ASU network and have an ASU Sun Card.

As a part of W. P. Carey School’s ongoing sustainability efforts, we ask all students to use the guidelines below when printing. Printing usage is monitored and if you are found to be abusing this policy, your printing privileges may be revoked.

  • Only use the color printer when necessary
  • Do not print textbooks or other lengthy manuals
  • Only print materials related to coursework
